Population experts predict there will be 50 million Americans age 65 and older by 2020.
The senior population is booming and there is rightfully more attention being paid to a population that is living longer, healthier and richer lives than ever before.
May is Older Americans Month and this year’s theme is “Connecting with the Community.” Our 31st Annual Senior Prom event on Thursday was a perfect example of how the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department connects with our city’s senior population.
Throughout the year, we provide a wide range of programming for seniors at the Golden Gate Park Senior Center and at many of our recreation centers and facilities throughout the city. Here is a small sampling of some of the exciting programs we’re offering this summer:
- Senior Art Expression at Glen Park, Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m.
- Senior Ethni-Jazz Lessons at Harvey Milk, Tuesdays from 6-7:30 p.m.
- Senior Water Fitness, Wednesdays at North Beach and Balboa pools
- Senior Tai Chi at Minnie & Lovie, Mondays and Saturdays from 10 am. to noon
I invite all of you to browse our complete catalog of classes and events for seniors at sfrecpark.org.
Today’s seniors are proving that it’s never too late to Get Out and Play!
